What is?

Posted by rich 20 August 2008

Back in 1990 while reading Richard Rorty's Contingency, Irony and Solidarity, I wrote a "poem" or dialogue about the nature of words, reality or something. This was before President Clinton asked about the definition of "is." It may seem like nonsense but it was helpful for my own processing at the time and I thought I'd share.

Explanatory note: In the poem I have a Greek word and a Hebrew word that I've transliterated here. "estin" is the Greek being verb and "hayah" is the Hebrew being verb.

What is?
What is what?
No, what is?
What is “is”?
Yes, what is “is”?
Is, is what is.
Is is, what is?
Yes, is is what is.
Or is what is is, is?
What is is?
What is, is?

Is is a word.
A sign?
A symbol?
A label?
Yes, a label.
A label for what?
For estin?
For hayah?
Whose label?
Your label? –perhaps
My label? –certainly
Is your is really is?
What is is?

God is.
God is “is”?
Yes. His is is “is”.
Is his is your is or is your is his is?
Not completely.
But my is is a little of his is.
His is is real is.
My is is an understanding of his is and what his is made.
So your is and my is aren’t really is?
Your is is your is and my is is my is
But his is is is.
How can your is be your is and my is be my is?
His is is not seen as his is is but as your is or my is.
Does your is or my is or your is and my is make his is?
No. His is is and his is made us.
Your is is and my is is because his is is.
When your is and my is see his is as his is is
Our is will be his is for we will see that is is his is and his is is is.
